3 [1] Il serpente era la più astuta di tutte le bestie selvatiche fatte dal Signore Dio. Egli disse alla donna: "È vero che Dio ha detto: Non dovete mangiare di nessun albero del giardino?". [2] Rispose la donna al serpente: "Dei frutti degli alberi del giardino noi possiamo mangiare, [3] ma del frutto dell'albero che sta in mezzo al giardino Dio ha detto: Non ne dovete mangiare e non lo dovete toccare, altrimenti morirete". [4] Ma il serpente disse alla donna: "Non morirete affatto! [5] Anzi, Dio sa che quando voi ne mangiaste, si aprirebbero i vostri occhi e diventereste come Dio, conoscendo il bene e il male". [6] Allora la donna vide che l'albero era buono da mangiare, gradito agli occhi e desiderabile per acquistare saggezza; prese del suo frutto e ne mangiò, poi ne diede anche al marito, che era con lei, e anch'egli ne mangiò. [7] Allora si aprirono gli occhi di tutti e due e si accorsero di essere nudi; intrecciarono foglie di fico e se ne fecero cinture.[8] Poi udirono il Signore Dio che passeggiava nel giardino alla brezza del giorno e l'uomo con sua moglie si nascosero dal Signore Dio, in mezzo agli alberi del giardino. [9] Ma il Signore Dio chiamò l'uomo e gli disse: "Dove sei?". [10] Rispose: "Ho udito il tuo passo nel giardino: ho avuto paura, perché sono nudo, e mi sono nascosto". [11] Riprese: "Chi ti ha fatto sapere che eri nudo? Hai forse mangiato dell'albero di cui ti avevo comandato di non mangiare?". [12] Rispose l'uomo: "La donna che tu mi hai posta accanto mi ha dato dell'albero e io ne ho mangiato". [13] Il Signore Dio disse alla donna: "Che hai fatto?". Rispose la donna: "Il serpente mi ha ingannata e io ho mangiato". [14] Allora il Signore Dio disse al serpente: "Poiché tu hai fatto questo, sii tu maledetto più di tutto il bestiame e più di tutte le bestie selvatiche; sul tuo ventre camminerai e polvere mangerai per tutti i giorni della tua vita. [15] Io porrò inimicizia tra te e la donna, tra la tua stirpe e la sua stirpe: questa ti schiaccerà la testa e tu le insidierai il calcagno". [16] Alla donna disse: "Moltiplicherò i tuoi dolori e le tue gravidanze, con dolore partorirai figli. Verso tuo marito sarà il tuo istinto, ma egli ti dominerà". [17] All'uomo disse: "Poiché hai ascoltato la voce di tua moglie e hai mangiato dell'albero, di cui ti avevo comandato: Non ne devi mangiare, maledetto sia il suolo per causa tua! Con dolore ne trarrai il cibo per tutti i giorni della tua vita. [18] Spine e cardi produrrà per te e mangerai l'erba campestre. [19] Con il sudore del tuo volto mangerai il pane; finchè tornerai alla terra, perchè da essa sei stato tratto: polvere tu sei e in polvere tornerai!". [20] L'uomo chiamò la moglie Eva, perché essa fu la madre di tutti i viventi. [21] Il Signore Dio fece all'uomo e alla donna tuniche di pelli e le vestì. [22] Il Signore Dio disse allora: "Ecco l'uomo è diventato come uno di noi, per la conoscenza del bene e del male. Ora, egli non stenda più la mano e non prenda anche dell'albero della vita, ne mangi e viva sempre!". [23] Il Signore Dio lo scacciò dal giardino di Eden, perché lavorasse il suolo da dove era stato tratto. [24] Scacciò l'uomo e pose ad oriente del giardino di Eden i cherubini e la fiamma della spada folgorante, per custodire la via all'albero della vita.

1 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals that the LORD God had made. The serpent asked the woman, "Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" 2 The woman answered the serpent: "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'" 4 But the serpent said to the woman: "You certainly will not die! 5 No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad." 6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. 8 When they heard the sound of the LORD God moving about in the garden at the breezy time of the day, the man and his wife hid themselves from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 The LORD God then called to the man and asked him, "Where are you?" 10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden; but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself." 11 Then he asked, "Who told you that you were naked? You have eaten, then, from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat!" 12 The man replied, "The woman whom you put here with me - she gave me fruit from the tree, so I ate it." 13 The LORD God then asked the woman, "Why did you do such a thing?" The woman answered, "The serpent tricked me into it, so I ate it." 14 Then the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, you shall be banned from all the animals and from all the wild creatures; On your belly shall you crawl, and dirt shall you eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; He will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel." 16 To the woman he said: "I will intensify the pangs of your childbearing; in pain shall you bring forth children. Yet your urge shall be for your husband, and he shall be your master." 17 To the man he said: "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree of which I had forbidden you to eat, "Cursed be the ground because of you! In toil shall you eat its yield all the days of your life. 18 Thorns and thistles shall it bring forth to you, as you eat of the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face shall you get bread to eat, Until you return to the ground, from which you were taken; For you are dirt, and to dirt you shall return." 20 The man called his wife Eve, because she became the mother of all the living. 21 For the man and his wife the LORD God made leather garments, with which he clothed them. 22 Then the LORD God said: "See! The man has become like one of us, knowing what is good and what is bad! Therefore, he must not be allowed to put out his hand to take fruit from the tree of life also, and thus eat of it and live forever." 23 The LORD God therefore banished him from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he had been taken. 24 When he expelled the man, he settled him east of the garden of Eden; and he stationed the cherubim and the fiery revolving sword, to guard the way to the tree of life.

3 Entonces la serpiente, que era el más astuto de todos los animales del campo que Jehovah Dios había hecho, dijo a la mujer: -¿De veras Dios os ha dicho: "No comáis de ningún árbol del jardín"? 2 La mujer respondió a la serpiente: -Podemos comer del fruto de los árboles del jardín. 3 Pero del fruto del árbol que está en medio del jardín ha dicho Dios: "No comáis de él, ni lo toquéis, no sea que muráis." 4 Entonces la serpiente dijo a la mujer: -Ciertamente no moriréis. 5 Es que Dios sabe que el día que comáis de él, vuestros ojos serán abiertos, y seréis como Dios, conociendo el bien y el mal. 6 Entonces la mujer vio que el árbol era bueno para comer, que era atractivo a la vista y que era árbol codiciable para alcanzar sabiduría. Tomó, pues, de su fruto y comió. Y también dio a su marido que estaba con ella, y él comió. 7 Y fueron abiertos los ojos de ambos, y se dieron cuenta de que estaban desnudos. Entonces cosieron hojas de higuera, y se hicieron ceñidores. 8 Cuando oyeron la voz de Jehovah Dios que se paseaba en el jardín en el fresco del día, el hombre y su mujer se escondieron de la presencia de Jehovah Dios entre los árboles del jardín. 9 Pero Jehovah Dios llamó al hombre y le preguntó: -¿Dónde estás tú? 10 El respondió: -Oí tu voz en el jardín y tuve miedo, porque estaba desnudo. Por eso me escondí. 11 Le preguntó Dios: -¿Quién te dijo que estabas desnudo? ¿Acaso has comido del árbol del que te mandé que no comieses? 12 El hombre respondió: -La mujer que me diste por compañera, ella me dio del árbol, y yo comí. 13 Entonces Jehovah Dios dijo a la mujer: -¿Por qué has hecho esto? La mujer dijo: -La serpiente me engañó, y comí. 14 Entonces Jehovah Dios dijo a la serpiente: -Porque hiciste esto, serás maldita entre todos los animales domésticos y entre todos los animales del campo. Te arrastrarás sobre tu vientre y comerás polvo todos los días de tu vida. 15 Y pondré enemistad entre ti y la mujer, y entre tu descendencia y su descendencia; ésta te herirá en la cabeza, y tú le herirás en el talón. 16 A la mujer dijo: -Aumentaré mucho tu sufrimiento en el embarazo; con dolor darás a luz a los hijos. Tu deseo te llevará a tu marido, y él se enseñoreará de ti. 17 Y al hombre dijo: -Porque obedeciste la voz de tu mujer y comiste del árbol del que te mandé diciendo: "No comas de él", sea maldita la tierra por tu causa. Con dolor comerás de ella todos los días de tu vida; 18 espinos y cardos te producirá, y comerás plantas del campo. 19 Con el sudor de tu frente comerás el pan hasta que vuelvas a la tierra, pues de ella fuiste tomado. Porque polvo eres y al polvo volverás. 20 El hombre llamó el nombre de su mujer Eva, porque ella sería la madre de todos los vivientes. 21 Luego Jehovah Dios hizo vestidos de piel para Adán y para su mujer, y los vistió. 22 Y Jehovah Dios dijo: -He aquí que el hombre ha llegado a ser como uno de nosotros, conociendo el bien y el mal. Ahora pues, que no extienda su mano, tome también del árbol de la vida, y coma y viva para siempre. 23 Y Jehovah Dios lo arrojó del jardín de Edén, para que labrase la tierra de la que fue tomado. 24 Expulsó, pues, al hombre y puso querubines al oriente del jardín de Edén, y una espada incandescente que se movía en toda dirección, para guardar el camino al árbol de la vida.
